ABOUT SANDBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL

Sandburg's Mission

At Sandburg Middle School, we embrace diversity and commit to excellence. We will show kindness, grow academically, and take responsibility to be a better Spartan. We will demonstrate these traits ourselves and encourage them in our peers.  We will find ourselves better for having been a Spartan.

Our school is named after one of the best known poets in American literature, Carl Sandburg. Born in 1878, he fought his way from obscurity to international fame in the best tradition of our country. He was at various times a soldier, dishwasher, harvest hand, and newspaper writer. Mr. Sandburg is perhaps best known for having written the famous Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years, and Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940.

Thirty-four colleges and universities, in the U.S. and abroad, have bestowed honorary degrees on Mr. Sandburg. In 1952, the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded their Gold Medal for History and Biography to Mr. Sandburg. Our school is one of the many schools now bearing his name.
