SCIENCE - TECHNOLOGY - ENGINEERING- ARTS- MATHEMATICS
Sandburg Middle School has a long-standing tradition for developing students with strong 21st- century skills; therefore our staff is constantly challenging themselves to create new ways to increase student success and interest in academics by increasing student engagement. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the school introduced students to S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)-based learning, which is becoming integrated into academics courses and supported by the Spartan S.T.E.A.M. Club.
The Spartan S.T.E.A.M. Club has experienced great success and popularity with the students, with over one hundred students attending each club meeting. The club engages students in real-world activities that challenge students to use the 4C’s of creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication while maintaining a high level of student interest and rigor. Club members have participated in the Hour of Code, have started to learn how to code their own website, as well as other activities that encourage teamwork, deep level thinking, and are always fun and engaging.
Due to the overwhelming success of the students, school leadership is now actively seeking donations, funding sources and grants opportunities to help create a “makerspace” on campus. A makerspace is a creative space where student can gather to create, invent, and learn. This space would be open to all students and help to house the numerous materials and tools Sandburg wishes to have someday. If you are interested in learning more about how Sandburg is incorporated S.T.E.A.M. into our students’ comprehensive education or would be interested in helping our school achieve our dream of a makerspace, please contact the advisors!
